Rubik's Cube

My journey with the Rubik's Cube started 4 years ago, when I received a Rubik's cube as a gift. I searched online for tutorials and eventually learned how to solve it using the beginner's method. I started timing my solves. In the beginning, my solves would take around one minute.

Soon, I was addicted to cubing. The joy of getting a fast solve motivated me to learn more advanced methods. I also bought my first speed cube - Rubik's cubes designed for speed-solving. I also tried out bigger cubes like 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 ,as well as 2x2x2.

NUS Singapore organizes two categories of Rubik's cube competition,

- The School Category, in which only school and junior college students participate, and

- Singapore Open Rubik's cube competition, which is open to all. The 'Open' category competition is endorsed by the World Cube Association.

The School Category competition has only three competitions namely 2x2x2, 3x3x3 and 4x4x4 cubes. However, the Open category, there are a total of eighteen (18) different competitions.

In 2014, I took part in my first Rubik's cube competition. I had made a lot of progress by now and was taking 15 seconds for a solve(3x3x3). In the school category, I won 1st prize for 2x2x2 event, which was totally unexpected.

I took part in six events of the Open Category, namely - 2x2x2, 3x3x3, 4x4x4, 5x5x5, 3x3x3 single handed and 3x3x3 blindfolded category.

In blindfolded solving, you have to memorise the cube, put on a blindfold, and then solve it without looking at it. It's not as hard as it appears, but if you make one small mistake, you will end up with an unsolved cube. In 2014, I got a time of 5 minutes- not a very good result for blindfolded. So throughout 2014, I tried to improve my blind solving time.

In 2015, I took part again in both School category and Open category competition and this time too, won the 1st prize in 2x2x2 cube school category. I improved my timings in all events. Apart from above six categories I participated in Megamix and Pyramix category also. I improved a lot in 3x3x3 blindfolded, where I got a time of 1:25.

I started becoming curious about solving bigger cubes blindfolded. I noticed that no one in Singapore had gotten a successful solve in 4x4x4 or 5x5x5 blindfolded in a competition, so I decided to learn and concentrated on those two events. These are considered the some of the hardest feats in cube solving. Memorising a 4x4x4 is the same as memorising two 3x3x3 cubes. Memorising a 5x5x5 is the same as memorising four 3x3x3 cubes. Using memory tricks and a lot of practice, memorising this is easier, but the chances of failure are much higher.

In 2016, I won 2nd prize in 2x2x2 school category. In Singapore Open Category, I took part in three new events- 4x4x4 blindfolded, 5x5x5 blindfolded and 3x3x3 multiple blindfolded. In the Multiple blindfolded event, the aim is to solve multiple 3x3x3 cubes at one go blindfolded. I attempted to solve six cubes in multiple blind folded category and was successful to solve four out of six. In Singapore open Category competition I am happy to share that I established Singapore's national record for 3x3x3 blindfolded, 4x4x4 blind folded as well as 5x5x5 blindfolded categories. I was very happy with my performance, as I was doubtful whether I could get a successful solve in 4x4x4 blindfolded and 5x5x5 blindfolded especially.

I would like to thank my parents, friends and all well-wishers for encouraging me in this hobby, and I hope to continue to improve in the future. Rubik's cube is a very interesting hobby. It takes determination and patience until you get the knack of it, but once you cross these initial hurdles, it is difficult to get separated from the cube! So friends, join the cubing community right away!

Thank you,

Shantanu Modak
